Chilliwack construction worker taken to hospital after house fire in Mission

A 31-year-old construction worker from Chilliwack was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition after a house fire in Mission on Thursday (July 9).

Mission Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) responded to the Cherry Avenue blaze at approximately 6 p.m. after reports of possible patients on scene.

In a news release, Mission RCMP said that three workers were renovating a deck at the residence when a large container of vinyl adhesive caught fire.

“The burning material reportedly also came into contact with one of the workers, causing him to fall from the deck to the concrete below,” RCMP said.

Upon arrival, crews found “heavy flame involvement” at the back of the three-story residential building that extended into the roof and main floors inside. MFRS said the fire was eventually knocked down and two dogs were rescued by firefighters during the response.

“Crews mounted an aggressive interior fire attack from the front of the building with a secondhand line being pulled around the back to fight the fire from the exterior of the building and protect exposures,” MFRS said in a statement.

BC Emergency Health Services said paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. Police said injuries included burns and other injuries from the fall.

The residents of the home were not injured. However, a cat that was outside at the time of the fire remains missing, according to a Facebook post from resident Brittany Patan.

Damage to the building was extensive and major overhaul of the residence occurred, MFRS said.

“The fire was quite deep-seated in the structure’s roof and walls,” the department said.

Twenty-five firefighters responded to the blaze and residents were assisted by Emergency Support Services.

MFRS said a fire investigation is pending.WorkSafeBC also attended the scene and is investigating as well.
