Police watchdog seeks more witnesses, video in fatal Boxing Day crash in Chilliwack

B.C.’s police watchdog is looking for more witnesses following a fatal crash that happened on Boxing Day last year in Chilliwack.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) put the call out on July 10 as part of their investigation into the Dec. 26, 2025 incident on Yale Road.

Shortly after 10:15 p.m., a white Ford pickup truck driven by a man was involved in a single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Yale and Banford roads.

Paramedics and the fire department attended, but the man died on scene.

“The RCMP reported no police involvement with the pickup truck prior to the collision and the IIO was not notified at the time,” according to IIO’s July 10 press release.

Three days later, the IIO received information from the public.

“As a result of information received from the public on Dec. 29, the IIO is now investigating the incident and the circumstances that led up to the collision.”

IIO has collected evidence and interviewed witnesses, and they are now looking for additional witnesses and video footage.

“Investigators continue to ask anyone who may have seen the incident on Dec. 26 or who have further video footage to contact the IIO.”

The IIO explained there are two factors it considers at the beginning of each investigation: if there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and if there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

Any witnesses who have information are asked to contact the IIO’s toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
