The Riley Creek wildfire south of Lillooet remains out of control, but the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports minimal growth over Thursday night.
The fire was discovered on Wednesday, June 24, and sized at 50 hectares.
It remains 50 hectares as of Friday, June 26, according to the BCWS’ latest update at 11:04 a.m.
The wildfire service provided a response update on Friday.
They say helicopters are assigned to the incident.
“There was minimal growth to this fire overnight,” they report.
On Friday morning, it was burning at Rank 1 and 2, meaning it was a smouldering ground fire with some pockets of visible flame and a slow rate of spread.
“This is a high elevation fire, burning high up in the mountains in steep and challenging terrain,” the BCWS says.
“As winds and temperatures naturally strengthen throughout the day, fire activity may increase and smoke will be visible from the community of Lillooet.”
The fire (number K70659) is suspected to have been caused by lightning.
