Metro Vancouver Transit Police statistics for the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year indicate a 103 per cent increase in the rate of property crimes against boarded public transit passengers, and a five per cent increase in police files to a total of 3,489 in the first three months of this year.
The rate of crimes against people, per 100,000 boarded passengers, rose by 11 per cent to 338 actual crimes compared to 320.
Over that same time frame this year compared to last the number of apprehensions under Section 28 of the Mental Health Act – when a person is deemed to pose a danger to themself or others – decreased by 29 per cent, to 37 from 52. In the first three months of 2026, 91 per cent were certified, held or voluntary admitted once at hospital.
The number of sex crimes increased by two, to 31 from 29.
The stats, reported by Transit Police Chief Suzanne Muir to the TransLink Board on June 24, also indicate a 56 per cent decrease in fare infraction notices.
