Three clean-energy projects in B.C. are among the $16 million in funding announced by the federal government Tuesday (June 23).
The federal government announced five projects would be getting the funding: three in B.C., one in the Yukon and one in the Northwest Territories.
In B.C., the three projects are located in Penticton, Prince Rupert and Vanderhoof.
The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is the recipient of the Penticton project funding, which is for renewable and electrification feasibility studies. The regional district is receiving $582,504.
The project is described as a series of energy audits, demand-side review and renewable and electrification feasibility studies on 38 facilities within the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.
Metlakatla Development Corporation is the recipient for the Metlakatla Mount Hays Wind Project in Prince Rupert. The corporation received $2 million from the federal government.
The project will focus on the feasibility stage for a proposed 100 per cent First Nation-owned 40-megawatt wind farm that will provide much needed electrical capacity to the Prince Rupert region.
Saik’uz First Nation is the recipient of $1.5 million for the Helhts’i Power Project in Vanderhoof.
The project will focus on pre-development activities for a proposed 200-megawatt wind farm, located 30 kilometres south of Vanderhoof, that will be Indigenous-led and majority-owned by the recipient.
The Yukon project is receiving $7.5 million, while the Northwest Territories project is slated for $4.4 million.
The funding follows a May 14 announcement for a planned National Electricity Strategy.
