FBI assists RCMP on threat directed at Salmon Arm school

An individual was arrested after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted RCMP in identifying a threat directed towards a Salmon Arm school.

That individual remains under house arrest and is being closely monitored by the RCMP, said School District 83 Supt. Donna Kriger in a June 18 letter received by parents of J.L. Jackson Secondary students.

Kriger said police were made aware of the threat “made towards a Salmon Arm school” over the winter break when school was not in session.

“Prior to school being back in session after the winter break, the individual responsible for the threat was arrested,” said Kriger, explaining the school was informed of the matter when it re-opened after winter break on Jan. 5, 2026.

“At the time, RCMP confirmed that any potential risk to students and staff had been eliminated and directed the district to not share information about the matter due to an ongoing investigation and publication ban… an order made by a court that prevents anyone from publishing, broadcasting, or transmitting any information that could identify a victim, witness, or other person involved in the criminal justice system.”

Kriger said the publication ban has since been lifted, allowing her to share information about the threat and related actions.

“I recognize that receiving this information may be unsettling and that this has been a challenging year for our school communities,” said Kriger. “I trust you will understand that until this time, I was legally unable to share any of this information with you.”

Kriger said the school district is “deeply grateful for the work and professionalism of the RCMP and the FBI, who first identified the threat,” and is thankful for the “support and care of the provincial Safer Schools Together team.”

“Finally, while we were legally unable to share this information with you or the J.L. Jackson staff until the publication ban was lifted, I want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff was our highest priority throughout,” said Kriger. “Should the safety of our students or staff ever be at risk, we will always act immediately and without hesitation, and you will be provided with all the information we are able to share.”
