SD42 to hold information sessions for prospective school trustee candidates

SD42 will holding information sessions for anyone thinking about running as a school board trustee in the upcoming election.

The sessions will provide to those interested in running, an overview of how the school district operates; it will outline the roles and responsibilities of trustees; and will inform on how the nomination process works and the election requirements.

Representatives from the City of Maple Ridge and the City of Pitt Meadows will be in attendance.

The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Board of Education is made up of five trustees representing Maple Ridge, and two trustees representing Pitt Meadows.

Trustees are elected every four years at the same time as the mayor and city council for the two municipalities.

School boards are responsible for operating school districts based on the educational aspirations of their local communities and in accordance with the provincial direction.

An average of 15 hours per week is a common time commitment for a school board trustee.

Remuneration for board members for 2025/26 was: $32,950 for a trustee; $34,450 for vice chairperson; and $35,950 for chairperson.

Next year’s remuneration for the new board will be determined at the June 17, public board meeting, and will be effective November 1.

There are two upcoming information sessions, both at 6 p.m. at the District Education Office, 22225 Brown Ave., Maple Ridge.

The first one will be taking place on Wednesday, June 24, and the second on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
