Woman struck by pickup truck in Mission, airlifted to hospital

A pedestrian was airlifted to hospital in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle in Mission on Tuesday night (June 16).

Mission RCMP said a 66-year-old woman suffered a serious head injury after she was hit by a grey Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at the corner of Cedar Street and Cherry Avenue just after 7:30 p.m.

Police said there is no further update on her condition as of Wednesday morning (June 17).

“It appears that the truck had been northbound on Cedar Street, stopped at a red light, then started to turn right onto Cherry Avenue. At the same time, the woman began crossing westbound across Cedar Street, reportedly with a pedestrian walk signal at the time,” RCMP said.

The detachment said the 73-year-old driver of the Silverado stopped and spoke with investigators.

The man registered a “warn” reading on a roadside screening device after police issued a breath demand to him.

“The alleged level of impairment did not meet the threshold for criminal impaired driving charges to be recommended,” police said.

The 73-year-old was issued a 3-day immediate roadside prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act.

“Mission RCMP highlight this as a reminder for drivers to exercise additional caution and awareness at all intersections, particularly when turning right on a red light,” the detachment said.

ICARS (Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service) was also on scene and the pickup truck will undergo a mechanical inspection.
