Surrey woman killed in collision on Lougheed Highway near Mission

A 56-year-old Surrey woman was killed in a crash near Mission on Sunday (June 14).

Mission RCMP said two cars were involved in a collision at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Sylvester Road in Hatzic.

According to a statement from the detachment, a grey Toyota Tundra pulling a trailer with an ATV struck a turning Toyota Camry.

“Video from a nearby gas station showed that the Camry had started to turn left onto Sylvester Road, but actually turned too soon, and began turning into the oncoming yield lane for traffic coming off of Sylvester Road. The Camry did not clear the lane in time, and was struck by the Tundra travelling straight through on the highway,” police said.

RCMP said the 56-year-old woman in the passenger seat of the Camry died on scene, while a 48-year-old Surrey woman in the rear seat is expected to survive after she was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The 59-year-old driver of the Camry and the occupants of the Tundra were not seriously injured, per the statement.

“A witness indicated that that none of the occupants of the Camry were wearing seat belts,” RCMP said.

Police say an investigation is ongoing but there is no indication that impairment played a role in the collision.

Those with information who have yet to speak to police are urged to call the detachment at 604-826-7161, referencing file 26-7744.
