One of Ryan Johnson’s last additions as general manager of the Abbotsford Canucks is remaining with the organization.
The club announced on Friday (June 12) that defenceman Jack Thompson has signed a one-year, two-way deal.
The 24-year-old was acquired by the Canucks in a trade with the San Jose Barracuda for defenceman Jett Woo on Jan. 5 and produced 13 points in 14 games for Abbotsford. He also put up 12 points in 42 games for the Barracuda.
Thompson scored 10 points in 31 games for the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25, but did not dress for an NHL games in 2025-26. He has also appeared in one game for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2023-24. The Ontario product has 104 points in 217 games in the AHL split between the Canucks, Barracuda and Syracuse Crunch.
Thompson was selected by the Lightning in round three (93rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft and also spent two seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves. He represented Canada at the 2022 World Junior Hockey Championships and helped the country win a gold medal.
Other free agent Abbotsford Canucks defenceman include Guillaume Brisebois and Cole Clayton. Brisebois is an unrestricted free agent, while Clayton is a restricted free agent. Abbotsford defenceman who suited up last year still under contract consist of Sawyer Mynio, Kirill Kudryavtsev, Jimmy Schuldt, Tom Willander, Victor Mancini and Elias Pettersson.
