Maple Ridge Burrards get fifth win to start WLA season, top standings

The Maple Ridge Burrards have stretched their season opening winning streak to five games, after a 9-7 victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen on Sunday night (June 7) at Cam Neely Arena.

They are on top of the standings in the Western Lacrosse Association as the only unbeaten team.

The Burrards were staring at their first loss of the season, down 7-6 after the first minute of the third period, but Dagan Carlson tied it up, and star Marcus Klarich got the game-winning goal to keep the good times rolling.

Veteran forward Garret Winter added an insurance goal, and he was the game’s first star with four goals and five points. Riley Loewen tallied a goal and had four points, and was named the second star.

Klarich had two goals and three assists, and continues to lead the WLA in points (32), goals (14), and assists (18).

Rookie goaltender Jack Kask leads the league in wins with all five, and he made 43 saves on 50 shots.

The biggest threat to Ridge’s unbeaten streak comes on Friday night, June 12, as they travel to the Q Centre in Victoria to face the Shamrocks. They sit in second place with a record of 4-1.

The Burrards will be back at home on Sunday, when they host the winless Burnaby Lakers (0-5) at 7 p.m. at Planet Ice, Cam Neely Arena.
