Police watchdog closes investigation on February crash in Kelowna

An investigation into a car crash that left one person injured after a driver fled a police traffic stop in Kelowna has concluded, B.C. police watchdog said on Monday, June 1.

Around 12:01 a.m. on Feb. 9, a Kelowna RCMP officer patrolling Highway 97 in the area of Sexsmith Road spotted a grey Ford F-150 with an incorrect license plate. The officer attempted a traffic stop from which the F-150 drove away.

Shortly after, the F-150 was involved in a collision with a white Mercedes Benz, injuring one of the occupants.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was called to investigate and has determined that the injuries do not meet the threshold of serious injury as defined by the Police Act.

The occupants of the F-150 fled the crash scene on foot, but were later located and arrested.
