B.C. rugby squad wins inaugural Western Canadian Championship

The first-ever Western Canadian Championship has come to an end, with one of the two B.C. rugby teams taking the title.

The three-game series included two matches at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford, which was also hosting the rugby high school provincials at the same time.

Only three teams competed in this inaugural championship, which included two B.C. squads – BC Gold and BC Blue – and one from Alberta.

The first match of the series took place earlier in May at Shawnigan Lake School, where the two B.C. teams battled one another in what turned out to be a close game.

BC Gold, which represented the mainland, fought against Vancouver Island’s BC Blue, with the gold squad coming out on top in a final score of 35-20.

The second match put BC Gold up against the Alberta Wolfpack at Rotary Stadium, with Abbotsford players Lana Dueck and Alli Dobson helping their team to fully utilize the home advantage.

The B.C. players dominated from the very start, ultimately leading to a 35-5 win against the Wolfpack.

Both B.C. teams proved their ability to beat the Albertans after BC Blue held the Wolfpack to only three points in the third and final match, which ended 43-3 for the British Columbians.

As the only undefeated team, BC Gold was declared the winner of the inaugural Western Canadian Championship.
