There was a fatal stabbing at Port Haney Wharf in Maple Ridge on Saturday evening, May 30.
Maple Ridge RCMP responded to a fight in progress in the 22300 block of River Road at 6:51 p.m., and arrived to find a 28-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.
Paramedics, and Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue responded, and despite life-saving measures, the victim died at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken conduct of the investigation, and says it is working in close partnership with the Maple Ridge RCMP Serious Crime Unit, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
IHIT’s Sgt. Freda Fong said there was a group of people involved in the fight, and police are investigating to clarify their involvement.
Investigators believe this was an isolated and targeted incident, where the parties involved were known to each other.
The investigation is ongoing. However, the incident is not believed to be related to gang activity.
“Thanks to the quick actions taken by Maple Ridge RCMP officers, the scene was contained quickly which allowed investigators to preserve critical evidence,” said Fong. “A number of witness interviews are underway as investigators piece together the events leading up to the altercation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this very difficult time.”
