Canada Post has recorded a $205-million loss before tax in the first quarter of 2026.
The Crown corporation released the latest data Friday (May 29) amid its multi-year transformation – which includes a full move to community mailboxes – that is aimed at moving Canada Post away from taxpayer-funded bailouts. The latest financial news comes after losses of $1.57 billion in 2025.
Canada Post lays some of the blame on the loss on the continued labour uncertainty.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post reached a tentative agreement in December 2025, but voting on the agreement didn’t begin until April 20. Saturday, May 30 is the final day of voting.
Canada Post says the uncertainty from bargaining “continued to weigh” on parcel revenue in the first quarter of 2026, with a loss of $79 million compared to the same period in 2025. The release adds that transaction mail and direct marketing lines of business also declined by $82 million and $24 million, respectively.
The release also points to increased labour costs due to higher wages and four additional paid days.
However, cost of operations declined by $19 million, or 6.9 per cent, which Canada Post says was partly due to a decline in outbound parcel volumes that resulted in lower fees paid to foreign postal administrations for delivering mail and parcels.
“Through the first quarter of 2026, the decline in volumes did not result in corresponding labour savings, as the company continued to operate with some labour structure inefficiencies.”
All of this comes as Canada Post is at the beginning of a transformation to modernize to stabilize its finances. That transformation was a directive from the federal government following a 2025 report that said the company was “effectively insolvent, or bankrupt.”
One of the first steps of that transformation is transitioning the remaining addresses to community mailboxes. A process which is expected to take about five years.
