B.C. police watchdog seeks public assistance in Island investigation

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is asking for witnesses to come forward following the arrest of a man in Sooke on March 23.

According to the organization, Sooke RCMP officers responded around 6:30 p.m. to a residence near Otter Point Park after being called to remove a man from the property at the request of the owner.

The man allegedly refused to leave the residence, leading to an interaction with police during which he sustained an injury. He was arrested and taken to the detachment.

The IIO was notified three days after the incident and has since launched an investigation.

The agency says it considers two factors at the start of each probe: whether there is an injury that meets the threshold of “serious harm” under the Police Act or a death, and whether there is a connection between that harm and police action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, investigators review all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will decide whether there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence may have been committed.

The IIO is asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact its witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or through its website at iiobc.ca.
