VIDEO: IHIT looking for links between fatal Langley shooting and previous shooting

Two shootings – one fatal, one not – in the same condo complex 11 days apart are being treated as two unrelated incidents at this point in the investigation, according to IHIT.

Sgt. Freda Fong met with media Wednesday to provide an update on the fatal shooting Tuesday night.

“At this time, what I can confirm is that there are two separate victims, but it is the same residential complex,” she said.

At about 11:34 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Langley RCMP responded to a report of shots being fired in the 5400 block of Brydon Crescent. First responders from the Langley RCMP, Langley City Fire Rescue Service, and BC Ambulance Services attended the area and found a person in medical distress. The victim, a man in his 40s, died.

“While it’s still early in the investigation, what I can confirm is that this appears to be an isolated incident that is limited to a single unit in a multi-dwelling residential complex,” Fong said.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and will work with Langley RCMP Serious Crime Unit and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services.

“We don’t want to like speak prematurely to draw a linkage when there is a link,” Fong said.

The police are not releasing the victim’s name at this point, citing the need to conduct notification of next of kin.

“The victim was known to police. He had a criminal history mostly for property related offenses,” she said.

“Right now this shooting is not believed to be related to extortion, and we are examining whether or not it’s related to other criminal offenses including gang activity,” Fong said.

The shooting took place within a unit in the complex and police received one call from within the building about shots fired. Fong said she could not disclose whether anyone else was present in the unit at the time of the shooting.

Investigators continue to canvas the area for witnesses and video footage, from either dashcams or surveillance cameras to help piece together the timeline and gather evidence. The unit where the shooting took place is locked so only investigators have access but residents of other units can come and go. As of Tuesday afternoon, police were stationed at the front of the building and parking garage.

Anyone with further information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Investigators are specifically looking for dashcam and surveillance footage between 10 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday, May 26.

In the previous shooting on May 16, the police were called at around 12:32 p.m. to a report of an assault. Officers attended, and located the victim as well as evidence consistent with a shooting.

A 27-year-old man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police also asked for public information, including dash-cam footage around that location between 12:15 and 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Contact the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and quote file #2026-14997.

Fong offered assurances to the public, including residents of the building that the police consider these targeted incidents and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“Anytime there is a shooting in a residential complex, you know, it raises awareness in the community, and we are just as concerned as the as the neighbourhood as the neighbours live there,” she said. “What is happening right now is, you know, it’s important to remember this is an isolated incident that is limited into one complex. We are investigating whether or not there are linkages linkages between the two shootings.”
