A cyclist is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle in Maple Ridge.
The crash happened at around 11 p.m. on Monday, May 25, in the 22100 block of Lougheed Highway.
A grey Mazda 3 was travelling eastbound on Lougheed Highway, when the driver struck the cyclist, who was crossing southbound across the road.
A passerby assisted the cyclist before the first responders arrived on scene.
The cyclist was transported to hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
Maple Ridge RCMP noted the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police.
Road conditions at the time were noted by police to be dark and rainy.
“The investigation is ongoing as officers complete a number of tasks required in these types of serious injury collisions,” said the Maple Ridge RCMP.
Police are reminding residents to be extra vigilant on the roadways, especially at night, and during periods of inclement weather.
Pedestrians are reminded to dress appropriately and not to assume drivers can always see them.
Additionally, police are warning drivers to drive with due care and attention, to follow speed limits and other rules of the road.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility for everyone,” added the Maple Ridge RCMP.
