SASCU, along with 11 other partnering credit unions from around B.C., raised $20,000 for Tumbler Ridge students in just two days.
On April 24 and 25, SASCU hosted the inaugural Joint BC Peer Group in Salmon Arm for collaboration and shared learning, with a fundraising aspect as well.
During the event, participants made the decision to redirect the planned 50/50 fundraiser in support of Tumbler Ridge following the recent fatal school shooting impacting the region.
“This initiative highlights the strength of the credit union system and what can be achieved when we work together,” SASCU president and CEO Barry Delaney said in a media release. “In times like this, it’s especially important that we come together to support communities facing difficult circumstances.”
The idea to direct the 50/50 to Tumbler Ridge came from the Northern B.C. based Lake View Credit Union (LVCU), with a focus on supporting local students there.
“With a branch in Tumbler Ridge, this initiative is deeply meaningful to our team,” LVCU director Darren Hamre said in the release. “Our thoughts are with the community, and we’re grateful to be part of an effort that supports students and helps contribute to their well-being during a difficult time.”
Over the two-day event, credit unions worked together to reach the $20,000 goal, the maximum allowed under the raffle licence. By the second day, the 50/50 had sold out, with participants then writing cheques directly to the Tumbler Ridge Secondary Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) that was the beneficiary.
“This effort speaks to the compassion and collaboration at the heart of the credit union system,” StellarVista Credit Union director Darla Ashton said. “It’s inspiring to see organizations come together to support students and help strengthen a community during a challenging time.”
After winning the draw, the Kootenay Savings Credit Union announced it would donate its 50/50 winnings back to the PAC. Final totals are still being calculated, but contributions are expected to reach between $22,000 and $25,000.
