Maple Ridge RCMP host Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special O

The Maple Ridge RCMP hosted the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics athletes on Thursday, May 14.

Mounties, athletes, emergency responders, politicians and other supporters laced up their running shoes and carried the flaming torch and Special O banner from the detachment, through Memorial Peace Park, and on a run through downtown for the occasion.

“It’s a great event,” said Insp. Martin Guay, who is the acting officer in charge for the Maple Ridge detachment. “Each year we do the Law Enforcement Torch Run where our police officers and supporters come together in order to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics, and it is just a great time.”

“We have tremendous support from the community,” he added. “It’s very rewarding to do this year after year, and it’s for a great cause.”

It was the 36th annual Special Olympics Torch Run in B.C., which has raised more than $5 million to benefit more than 3,400 athletes with intellectual disabilities across B.C.

Athletes took the podium to talk about winning medals, qualifying to attend provincials and national championships, meeting new friends, and travelling to new places.

Tammy, who has participated in baseball, swimming, bowling, track and field, bocci and other sports, told the crowd to encourage other athletes to come out.

“It’s a really fun experience,” she said. “Thank you all for supporting us in the torch run.”

Money raised helps keep registration fees low for athletes and also goes towards equipment and uniforms.

The website showed the local run had already raised more than $2,500, and donations can be made online.
