1st Laity View Scouts clean headstones at Maple Ridge Cemetery

A group of 1st Laity View Scouts worked hard cleaning headstones at Maple Ridge Cemetery.

Owen, Wyatt, and Anthony, were able to clean more than 60 headstones on Wednesday, April 29.

The trio are working towards their Chief Scout’s Award.

Many public headstone preservation sessions will be taking place over the summer.

They are put on by the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives, and volunteers are always needed.

According to the museum, Maple Ridge Cemetery and Whonnock Cemetery have graves dating back hundreds of years and many of the people buried there are early settlers of the community.

They do not have anyone left to care for their resting place.

Cleaning and maintaining the headstones is an important job to preserve the history of the community.

Pre-reservation is required and all ages are welcome to participate in headstone preservation. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteers must provide their own cleaning supplies. A list will be sent out prior to the day.
