Maple Ridge RCMP honour inspirational constable with gym dedication

The Maple Ridge RCMP have dedicated their gym in honour of one of their officers who died after a battle with cancer.

The Mounties held a private ceremony to celebrate the opening of the detachment’s newly renovated facility and honour the legacy of Const. Mike Pedrosa.

He is described as an inspiration to many and noted for his commitment to health, teamwork, and service. He lost his life in 2020.

On March 10, family members received a first-hand look at the upgraded space, which is adorned with tributes to Pedrosa. This includes his name, regimental number, and a quote from his valedictorian speech at RCMP Depot, which are all posted on the walls.

Officers, staff, and special guests were encouraged to write out inspirational messages of hope and resilience on the gym mirrors in his honour.

“Constable Pedrosa was an inspiration to many here at our detachment, and we wanted to honour his passion for fitness and camaraderie,” said Maple Ridge RCMP Operations Support Officer Insp. Rochelle Kokkoris. “This new space is a welcome reminder about what he stood for and his dedication to wellness, resilience, and the continued strength of our detachment community.”

His wife expressed that her family was honoured.

“We are proud to see Mike’s legacy live on in this way and be associated with health and wellness,” said Ida Pedrosa. “He touched many lives and to see his name on these walls is a reminder for everyone to keep going and never give up no matter what comes your way.”

During upcoming Mental Health Week (May 4-10), Maple Ridge RCMP and the City of Maple Ridge will be participating in several in-house activities to support the mental and physical well-being of officers and staff.

The police encourage everyone to pause and reflect on their own well-being, and help raise awareness about the importance of healthy and safe workplaces.
