Detail in cliff-side home earns award

A Maple Ridge woodworking company joined four other Lower Mainland companies in accepting top honours for their work crafting a new high-end, luxury home set against the rock cliffs overlooking Belcarra Bay.

When the homebuilding industry of Metro Vancouver handed out its top awards recently, Steve Glegg and his team from Stirling Woodworks Ltd. were there to accept some of the accolades dished out by the Homebuilders Association Vancouver (HAVAN).

The overall efforts specific to the Vistas at Belcarra Bay project put the builder and a number of sub trades (Stirling included) on the shortlist for the industry honours.

In fact, Glegg’s 15-member team is was shortlisted for a total of five HAVAN awards for this unique project, but they received the award for the best custom home valued at more than $10-million.

“The designer has done some incredible work on this project and we pride ourselves on being able to do just about anything any designer can put on the page,” Glegg told The News, admitting he loves the home but is most enamoured with the slat hallway hidden doors and detailed walk-in closet.

“Stirling’s many years of being in business, while doing great work like this, grants us the ability to accomplish things many company’s cannot,” he said, noting the company was started in 1986 by his father, William, and now involves Glegg’s son Tom and daughter Shelby.

While Stirling has shipped work to the U.S. in past, most of the local family-run company’s projects are in the Lower Mainland, the Okanagan, and a few in Whistler.

“[The HAVAN award] gives our employees a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work,” Glegg said, noting this was Stirling’s first time in the running for a HAVAN award.

HAVAN Awards celebrate the very best in new-home construction, renovation, and design project within Metro Vancouver’s homebuilding industry, explained HAVAN CEO Wendy McNeil.

“The range of winners across the categories this year speaks to the strength of our industry and how competitive our market has become, making a HAVAN Award a significant achievement,” she said.

“Each year, the program is reviewed to reflect the changing housing landscape, with categories that respond to how homes are being delivered today and the need to address housing challenges, including small-scale multi-unit housing, multiplex, and modular solutions that support much-needed missing middle housing. These awards help homeowners identify professionals who consistently deliver industry-leading results.”
