Thousands enjoy the free Family Fest at the home show in Maple Ridge

Whether it’s the latest in household gadgets, the outdoor entertainment, or the food, guests of the Ridge Meadows Home Show are torn about what they enjoy the most.

On Saturday, though, guests were having a great time in the sun at the free Family Fest.

Thousands of people streamed through the fairgrounds, taking in the free entertainment, mini golf, crafts, and the new Paw Patch area with unique items and services for dogs.

This was Crystal Vanblankers’ second time visiting the home show and she said the best part was the Family Fest, especially the treats, the games, and the rides.

Her daughter Madison, 4, won a pink dinosaur by playing the water gun race.

“I was focusing,” Madison noted.

Mission resident Will Slack was at the Family Fest with his three-year-old son Jude, and had been on about three or four rides with his son.

He said the best part of the festival were the rides and seeing his son’s face light up with joy.

“He’s got me out of my comfort zone already cause I went on the Ferris wheel with him and I hate heights,” laughed dad.

Austin Grafstrom and Parker Jezko, both 8, enjoyed the Scouts kub kar racing event.

But, as members of the 1st Laity View Scouts, they were actually racing their own kub kars.

Jezko, who came first overall in his age group, said he wasn’t sure what makes a kub kar go fast because they just paint them.

“Some kids used markers to make it lighter,” explained Jezko’s friend and fellow Scout Paxton Dolkhanian, 7.

“Which is an advantage,” Dolkhanian advised. “Because paint is thicker.”

“But if it is too light, then it can fall down,” countered Jezko.

Aside from kub kar racing, the boys were also enjoying the mini golf.

The Ridge Meadows Home Show is one of the largest in the province, welcoming more than 20,000 people who attend the show every year, coming from communities across the Lower Mainland and beyond.

In Planet Ice and the Golden Ears Winter Club, guests will find experts in home renovation, outdoor landscaping, interior decor, and personal well being.

With close to 300 exhibitor booths, the show has something for everyone. Like great gadgets and unique household products, the latest in health and beauty, fitness, and the annual Body, Mind & Spirit Psychic Fair.
