Man arrested following homicide, fire at Abbotsford homeless encampment

A man has been arrested following a homicide and fire at a homeless camp in Abbotsford on Friday evening.

Abbotsford Police Department and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service were called to the fire around 6:09 p.m. on April 24 at the encampment located on provincial land in the 31500 block of South Fraser Way.

The fire was limited to a single wooden structure.

“Following fire suppression efforts by Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, a man was found deceased. Further investigation has confirmed this incident to be a homicide,” Sgt. Paul Walker, AbbyPD media relations officer stated in a press release later that same night.

They arrested a man who remains in police custody.

The investigation has been taken over by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

“The investigation is ongoing and remains in the early stages, with additional resources supporting efforts to fully understand the circumstances involved. AbbyPD can confirm this was an isolated and targeted incident and the public is not at risk.”
