Canadian expert giving talk in Maple Ridge on coexisting with wildlife

One of Canada’s leading experts in humane wildlife management will be the guest speaker at the Alouette River Management Society’s upcoming annual general meeting.

Adrian Nelson from Silver Creek Wildlife has worked across the country helping landowners, First Nations, NGOs, and government agencies find innovative solutions for beavers, large carnivores, and other wildlife, all while keeping safety and ecosystems in mind, said Sophie Sparrow, with the society.

At the meeting Nelson will lead an engaging discussion about beavers – nature’s ecosystem engineers.

“Discover how these remarkable animals shape landscapes, support biodiversity, and play a vital role in healthy watersheds,” Sparrow noted.

Nelson will be talking about how to manage beaver conflicts while creating fish habitat and wetlands; non-lethal methods for coexisting with carnivores and mesopredators or medium-sized predators; and tips for wildlife conflict mitigation for everything from bats to otters.

“Whether you’re a long-time supporter, a nature enthusiast, or just curious about local wildlife, this is a session you won’t want to miss,” said Sparrow.

The meeting will also feature the year’s achievements by the local environmental society and they will be also be discussing future initiatives.

Sparrow is hoping to connect with like-minded individuals who are dedicated to environmental conservation in the community.

The AGM will be taking place from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, in the Fraser Room at the Maple Ridge Public Library, at 22470 Dewdney Trunk Road. Doors open at 5:45 p.m.

Board members will also be elected at the meeting and there will be an opportunity to vote and contribute ideas.

Memberships are not needed to attend the event but can still be purchased, $10 for one year.

However, the deadline has passed to be able to vote at this year’s AGM.

”We hope you’ll join us for an evening of connection, learning, and community stewardship,” said Sparrow.
