As soon as this week, construction will begin on two new turf fields and other amenities at the Pitt Meadows Athletic Park.
At the March 31 meeting, city council reviewed a construction contract awarded to Cedar Crest Lands for $12.3 million plus GST. For this, the city will get:
• A double artificial turf field with lighting
• A covered multi-sport box
• A building washroom/changerooms building
• New parking lot
• Spectator seating
The project will also bring improved connections between the park, adjacent amenity lands, and the arena complex.
“The amenities being added and improved at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park will create the kind of world-class recreation space our residents, athletes and families deserve,” said Mayor Nicole MacDonald. “We look forward to seeing this space come to life and welcoming the community back to an even better athletic park.”
A provincial grant of $5.4 million, announced in March 2023, helped fund the project.
“This is a project our community is going to get really excited for,” said Coun. Alison Evans. “It’s a beautiful addition to our facilities, and we know there’s a demand for more sport infrastructure, especially with the loss of the Pitt Meadows secondary field.”
Once built, it will create a centralized sports hub, and was guided by the city’s parks, recreation and culture planning process.
“The Pitt Meadows Athletic Park Expansion reflects our commitment to building parks that truly serve our community,” said manager of parks Andy Messner. “The feedback we received from residents during the development of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan helped guide these new features and upgrades.”
Work continue until the end of 2026. Temporary impacts related to construction, including possible closures, detours or parking changes, may occur during the project. Notices and updates will be posted on the city’s website as construction progresses.
