A mysterious plant and meek florist make musical magic in Maple Ridge Secondary’s upcoming production

A meek flower assistant an a giant singing plant are central to the plot in Maple Ridge Secondary’s production of the Broadway version of the comedy/horror “Little Shop of Horrors”.

The story follows Seymour who discovers a mysterious plant which he calls Audrey ll after his coworker, whom he has fallen in love with.

However, as time goes on and the plant grows, if forces Seymour to feed it human blood, and Seymour discovers it’s intent of achieving world domination.

Students in Grades 9 to 12 worked on the project, and, the new drama teacher at MRSS noted, they have approached every challenge with enthusiasm, professionalism, and a genuine love for musical theatre.

“Our grade 9 through 12 students have grown tremendously throughout this process, building the competencies emphasized in the B.C. curriculum: creative expression, technical skill development, rehearsing and refining, and working collaboratively within a large ensemble,” said Sharmila Miller Svorinic.

“They’ve learned to manage complex tasks, communicate effectively within a company, and make artistic choices that support storytelling. This production is a powerful example of the deep learning that musical theatre can inspire,” said the new drama teacher.

This year the show is being produced in the drama classroom, which has mean the set design team has been able to put together a fantastic immersive environment.

Finn Dion-Fell, student director who plays the main character Seymour, is excited for the audience to see how they put the show together.

“Everyday we come into the theatre room and we’re always giving 100 per cent because we care so much about the production and our fellow cast mates,” says Abigail Vervaet, who plays the supporting lead character Audrey.

Music for the show was written by American composer and conductor Alan Menken, who also did the music for “The Little Mermaid” in 1989, “Aladdin” in 1992, and “Hercules” in 1997, to name a few.

“This show not only has great music, a giant singing plant, and dynamic characters, but will leave you humming the songs for days,” said Miller Svorinic.
