Officers at Mountain Institution in Agassiz have seized more than $300,000 in unauthorized items and contraband in a recent operation on March 26.
On Monday, March 30, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) stated that among the contraband seized were cell phones, charging cables, accessories and shatter – concentrated cannabis with a glassy texture. The total institutional value of the seized items was $308,440.
The Agassiz RCMP have been notified and the CSC is investigating.
The CSC uses a number of tools to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering the prison. This includes drug detector dogs, ion scanners and searches of personal property, inmates and visitors.
“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” the CSC stated. “CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”
The CSC has a phone tip line for all their federal institutions to receive information concerning unauthorized items, drug trafficking and other security issues. The toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784; the information shared on that phone line is protected and callers remain anonymous.
