Chilliwack River Valley breathes sigh of relief as weather settles, evacuation alerts rescinded

Evacuation alerts were rescinded in the Chilliwack River Valley and the flood watch was downgraded across the Fraser Valley over the weekend but the State of Local Emergency remains in place in the FVRD’s Electoral Area E.

The CRV community has been breathing a collective sigh of relief as the weather has settled in recent days.

Patti MacAhonic, FVRD’s Electoral Area E rep said after touring the area last week she felt compelled to emphasize the strength and resilience of her CRV community.

“With climate events coming one after another, residents are moving from alert to response to recovery over and over again,” MacAhonic said in a post March 21, talking about the series of back-to-back storms.

“It’s exhausting, it’s stressful, but at the same time, we’re seeing incredible strength in neighbours supporting one another.”

Electoral Area E covers a large area in the CRV where about 1,600 residents live. The area encompasses Slesse Creek and Chilliwack Lake.

“I just want to say how proud I am of our valley,” MacAhonic said. “Once again, neighbours were helping neighbours, and that care for one another truly stands out.

“Thank you for continuing to stay safe and look out for each other.”

She offered a final note of caution against using the area near the Chilliwack River, since the landslide risk remains active due to the highly saturated soils.

“Stay away from fast-moving water and unstable banks,” the message said. “Please stay out of the river – debris and currents are still dangerous.”

Taryn Dixon, Electoral Area H rep for the FVRD, posted some rain totals recorded for the region, from March 16-20, 2026 for comparison:

Chilliwack River Valley (Area E) at Ford Mountain 199.4 mm

Cultus Lake (Area H) 176.6 mm

Chilliwack 146.2 mm

Agassiz 182.4 mm

Weather is expected to settle this week, with only light rain mid-week, but some risk still exists.

The FVRD’s Emergency Operation Centre is still in operation and its State of Local Emergency remains in place for Electoral Area E.
