Buchnevich leads visiting St. Louis Blues to 3-1 win over Canucks

Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and an assist, lifting the visiting St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

Pius Suter had the other goal for the Blues (28-30-11), with Logan Mailloux adding two assists. Jordan Binnington picked up the win in goal, making 14 saves.

Filip Hronek had the lone goal for Vancouver (21-40-8). Kevin Lankinen took the loss in net, stopping 18 shots.

The teams battled through a low-event first period, with St. Louis outshooting Vancouver 5-4.

Former Canuck Suter opened the scoring at 10:17 of the second period, ramming home a rebound of a Robert Thomas shot for his 11th goal of the year.

Buchnevich made it 2-0 just 79 seconds later, one-timing a feed from Philip Broberg and beating Lankinen for his 16th tally of the season.

Shots after 40 minutes favoured the Blues 16-10.

Hronek pulled Vancouver within 2-1 on the power play 8:32 into the third, when his wrist shot from the point tipped off a defender and past Binnington. Hronek now has eight goals for the year.

A cross-checking penalty to Hronek with 2:16 left essentially ended Vancouver’s comeback bid.

The shorthanded Canucks did pull Lankinen with a minute to play, but promptly gave up an empty-netter to Kyrou to round out the scoring.

Vancouver hosts the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday (7 p.m.).

NOTES: Vancouver’s Marco Rossi picked up an assist on Hronek’s goal, extending his point-scoring streak to five games. He has 10 points in that span… Centre Elias Pettersson also assisted on Hronek’s goal and moved past Todd Bertuzzi for 10th spot in franchise history for power-play points with 164… Buchnevich now has 500 NHL points.
