Maple Ridge man, North Van woman charged with killing Iranian-Canadian man

A Maple Ridge man and a North Van woman have been charged with killing self-described Iranian activist Masood Masjoody.

A statement issued Saturday by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said on Friday, March 13, two charges of first-degree murder were laid against 48-year-old Mehdi Ahmadzadeh Razavi of Maple Ridge and 45-year-old Arezou Soltani of North Vancouver in relation to the homicide of the 45-year-old Masood Masjoody, a Burnaby resident whose body was discovered in Mission on March 6.

“We understand this case has impacted the Iranian community and has generated widespread concern and public interest. While the motive is still under investigation, we can say the victim and two accused were known to each other,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.

“The laying of first-degree murder charges marks a significant milestone and reflects the hard work undertaken over the past several weeks; however, much work remains as the prosecution process begins.”

Masjoody was reported missing on Feb. 2 after police received reports from concerned neighbours.

IHIT said investigators looking into the circumstances leading up to Masjoody’s disappearance, uncovered evidence that led them to believe Mr. Masjoody was victim to homicide.

Masjoody, who reportedy described himself as a “pro‑democracy activist” had filed multiple lawsuits including one against members of the Iranian community in the Lower Mainland.
