Jake DeBrusk scored the winning goal in a shooting, helping the Vancouver Canucks to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators in NHL action Thursday at Rogers Arena.
Marco Rossi had a goal and two assists to led the offence for Vancouver (20-37-8), with Brock Boeser and Filip Hronek each adding a goal and a helper. Nikita Tolopilo earned the win in goal, stopping 16 shots.
Tyson Jost (2) and Matthew Wood replied for the Predators (29-27-9), with Juuse Saros taking the netminding loss, stopping 23 of 26 shots.
Boeser opened the scoring for the Canucks 8:40 into the first period. Hronek’s point shot was deflected in the slot by Rossi, then again in front of the net by Boeser, who tipped it past Saros for his 16th goal of the year.
Jost pulled the Preds even with 1:32 left in the period, jamming a rebound past Tolopilo. It was the fifth goal of the season for the former B.C. Hockey League star with the Penticton Vees.
Shots on goal after 20 minutes favoured the Canucks, 12-5.
Jost tallied again 5:20 into the second period, giving Nashville a 2-1 lead. Roman Josi’s point shot banked off the back boards, through a handful of players and right to Jost, who buried his second of the game.
Wood, a Nanaimo product playing in his first NHL game in his home province, delighted a large group of friends and family when he scored his 14th of the year at 14:06. Wood’s shot from the right side deflected off Vancouver’s Liam Ohgren and past Tolopilo.
Wood is currently on a four-game point-scoring streak.
Nashville outshot the Canucks 8-6 in the middle frame.
The third period was a listless affair for long stretches, with each team having just one shot apiece through 13 minutes of action.
Rossi pulled Vancouver within one at 3-2 with 4:05 remaining, depositing a loose puck behind Saros for his seventh goal of the season. The Canucks pulled Tolopilo in favour of an extra attacker with two minutes to play and Hronek tied things at 3-3 with 60 seconds to play. Hronek moved in from the right point and beat Saros with a laser high to the blocker side for his seventh tally of the year, setting the stage for 3-on-3 overtime.

With less than a minute left in OT, Nashville’s Ryan O’Reilly and Vancouver centre Elias Pettersson exchanged glorious chances, but the goalies stood tall.
DeBrusk scored the lone goal of the shootout, beating Saros high to the blocker side. Tolopilo denied Steven Stamkos to seal the victory for the Canucks.
Vancouver hosts the Seattle Kraken Saturday (7 p.m.).
NOTES: Wood played in the BCHL for the Victoria Grizzlies… Nashville went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Canucs failed to scored on their sole chance with the man advantage.
