The Abbotsford Canucks continue to be active in the college free agent market, as the club announced the signing of Clark Cup winning forward Bennett Schimek to a one-year AHL deal.
The club shared details on Schimek on Wednesday (March 11), just one day after the inking of college free agent forward Austin Brimmer.
Schimek, a 6-0 forward from Minnesota, recently finished his final season of NCAA hockey with the Arizona State University Sun Devils. He recorded a career-high 43 points in 35 games with ASU in 2025-26. Schimek added 37 points in 35 games in 2024-25 and prior to his time at ASU he posted 37 points in 71 games for the Providence College Friars. He played alongside current Abbotsford Canucks forward Nick Poisson in Providence.
This season saw Schimek named both the National Collegiate Hockey Conference forward of the month for December 2025 and the forward of the week for Dec. 16, 2025. He also served as the Sun Devils co-captain for 2025-26. Schimek went on to be named an NCHC second team all-star earlier this month.
Schmiek played two seasons with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League and collected 60 points in 89 games. He helped that Musketeers team win the coveted Clark Cup when they defeated the Madison Capitols in 2021-22.
He was ranked 121st among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2021 NHL Draft, but was never selected.
His contract begins next season, but he will join the Abbotsford Canucks for the remainder of the 2025-26 season under a professional try-out agreement.
The Canucks return to action tonight (Wednesday) against the Manitoba Moose. The club next hosts the Henderson Silver Knights for games on Saturday (March 14) and Sunday (March 15).
