Abbotsford Canucks sign college free agent Austin Brimmer

The Abbotsford Canucks have signed former Robertson Cup champion Austin Brimmer to a one-year AHL contract for next season and he will join the team on a professional try-out agreement for the rest of this season.

Brimmer, a 6-4 forward from Markham, Ont., recently completed his senior year with the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers and scored 25 points in 36 games.

He served as an alternate captain for the team and was the Atlantic Hockey America player of the week for the week of Jan. 27.

He previously played three seasons with the Long Island University Sharks and recorded 53 points in 95 games. His junior career saw him win the North American Hockey League’s Robertson Cup with the Shreveport Mudbugs in the 2020-21 season. Over two seasons in Louisiana he scored 83 points in 101 games, including 55 points in 54 games in the 2021-22 season.

Brimmer also played parts of three seasons for the North York Rangers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and scored 67 points in 104 games.

He studied finance at school and stated on his LinkedIn page that juggling time as student-athlete has made him a better person.

“My journey as a student-athlete has instilled a profound dedication to teamwork, time management, and resilience qualities,” he stated. “Beyond academics and athletics, I have developed leadership and collaborative skills through various roles, fostering camaraderie and mutual support among teammates and peers.”

The Canucks return to action tonight (Tuesday) at home against the Manitoba Moose. The two teams square off again inside the Rogers Forum on Wednesday (March 11) It’s possible that Brimmer could made his professional debut in one of those games.

The club remains home for games against the Henderson Silver Knights on Saturday (March 14) and Sunday (March 15).
