Balmy February breaks 3 B.C. weather records

An unseasonably warm winter has broken some records in the region.

While the normal maximum temperature for this time of year is around five degrees Celsius, both Vernon and Salmon Arm were well above that on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Salmon Arm set a new record of 15.2 C, breaking the 10.6 record set in 1932.

The mercury reached 11.7 C in Vernon, breaking the old record of 10.7 set in 2005.

Aside from Cache Creek, they were the only two areas in B.C. to break records.

Cache Creek broke its 1980 record of 12 C as it warmed up to 13.5.

And it doesn’t look like winter will settle back in anytime soon.

The forecast for Vernon from Environment Canada is a high of 11 C today with a chance of showers and low of 1 overnight.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected for the weekend with highs of 9 and 10 for Saturday and Sunday, dropping to a low of -2 overnight Saturday.

Sun and 11 is forecast for Monday, 10 with a slight chance of showers Tuesday and 9 for both Wednesday and Thursday.

Salmon Arm is expected to reach 12 today with a chance of showers.

The weekend echoes that of Vernon, followed by a sunny Monday at 10,

Showers could sprinkle down Tuesday through Thursday with highs of 10 and 9 forecast.
