Fatal freight train incident in Maple Ridge

One person is dead after being hit by a train on Sunday night, Feb. 22, in Maple Ridge.

First responders raced to the incident at around 8:30 p.m. in the 22300 block of River Road, by Port Haney Station.

Fire Chief Dave Samson with Maple Ridge Fire and Rescue said BC EHS were the first on scene, where they pronounced one person dead.

Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed it was a female pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train.

One witness noted it was around 8:15 p.m. when they heard the train whistle blow once and then the train’s emergency breaks before the train came to a stop.

CPKC Police Service has since taken over the investigation.

The railroad company said a train made contact with a person on the tracks just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening.

“This incident is under investigation. The involved train moved from the area later Sunday evening,” said CPKC spokesperson Terry Cunha.
