Defence lifts Seattle Seahawks to 29-13 Super Bowl win over New England

The Legion of Boom has some company.

The Seattle Seahawks used an outstanding defensive effort, reminiscent of their famous championship unit in 2014, to beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Seattle sacked New England quarterback Drake May six times and got a defensive touchdown from Uchenna Nwosu. Kicker Jason Myers added five field goals and two conversions, with tight end AJ Barner snaring a touchdown catch. Running back Kenneth Walker had 27 rushes for 135 yards for the winners and was named game MVP, while quarterback Sam Darnold was 19-for-38 for 202 yards and a touchdown. Derick Hall and Byron Murphy had two sacks apiece, while Devon Witherspoon had a sack, a pass defended and another tackle for loss.

Quarterback Drake Maye was 27 for 43 for 295 yards and two touchdowns for New England, but tossed two costly interceptions and lost a fumble. Mack Hollins and Rhamondre Stevenson had the Patriots touchdowns.

The first half was dominated by the defences.

The Seahawks took the opening drive deep into New England territory but stalled, settling for a 33-yard Myers field goal and a 3-0 lead at 3:02.

They held that margin after the first quarter, with the teams exchanging a series of punts through the first 15 minutes.

An eight-play, 55-yard drive for the Seahawks early in the second quarter ended with another Myers field goal, this time from 39 yards out to up the lead to 6-0.

Late in the quarter, the Seahawks advanced into New England territory for the fourth time. After New England defensive back Christian Gonzales broke up a third-down pass play at the goal line, Myers booted his third field goal, a 41-yarder with 11 seconds left to up the lead to 9-0 at the break.

Seattle held New England to just 51 total yards, with Maye going 6-for-11 for 48 yards. He was sacked there times, by Rylie Mills, Hall and Witherspoon.

For the Seahawks, Walker had a productive half, rushing 14 times for 94 yards (the second-most in a first half in Super Bowl history). But Darnold struggled, going just 9-for-22 for 88 yards.

After a New England three-and-out to start the third quarter, the Seahawks again moved into New England territory, but their 10-play 69-yard drive ended with a fourth Myers field goal, a 41-yarder to give Seattle a 12-0 lead.

With 10 seconds left in the quarter, Maye was sacked by Hall and fumbled inside his own 30-yard line, with Seattle’s Murphy recovering, giving the ’Hawks the ball and a 12-point lead heading into the final quarter.

Seattle made the Patriots pay for the turnover when Darnold connected with tight end for a 16-yard touchdown 1:36 into the fouth quarter. Myers added the convert to make it 19-0.

The Patriots answered quickly, marching down the field and scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Maye to receiver Hollins. Andy Borregales added the conversion to pull the Pats within 19-7 with 12:27 to play.

New England got the ball back and appeared to be building some momentum with just under nine minutes left to play, but Maye tossed a crucial interception, getting picked off by Seattle’s Julian Love at the Seahawks 27. He took it back 35 yards into New England territory.

Three minutes later, Myers added his Super Bowl-record fifth field goal from 26 yards out to boost the Seattle lead to 22-7.

The Seahawks sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter, with Witherspoon hitting Maye on a pass attempt that went directly into the hands of Nwosu, who rumbled 45 yards for a touchdown. Myers added the convert, his 17th point of the game as Seattle took a 29-7 lead.

The Patriots picked up a late touchdown when Maye flipped a seven-yard pass to Stevenson. A two-point conversion attempt failed, making the score 29-13 with 2:21 to play.

New England then attempted on onside kick, but it was recovered cleanly by Seattle’s George Holani.

With two minutes left, Walker broke free on what appeared to be a long touchdown run, but it was called back after the Seahawks were penalized for holding.

NOTES: Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was taken into the medical tent and later the locker room in the third quarter as part of the league’s concussion protocol. He returned to action early in the fourth quarter… The last time the Seahawks played in the title game was against the Patriots in 2015 for Super Bowl XLIX, where Seattle lost a 28-24 decision after a late interception at the goal line… Seattle finished the year with 10 straight wins, the second-longest in franchise history (11 in 2005)… It was Darnold’s first win in five career tries against the Patriots.
