An unsettling act of sexual assault alleged against horses by a strange man has left the owner, and broader community, shaken.
Abigail Equestrian, a professional training facility on L&A Road in the BX, says an unknown man trespassed early Saturday, Jan. 24.
“He was in with my horses in the middle of the night and assaulted some of my horses,” said owner Erica Van Meenen.
She confirmed with The Morning Star that it was a sexual assault.
“He raped at least one horse and that was caught on video surveillance.”
Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were called at 1 a.m. to the property but the suspect fled prior to them arriving.
An RCMP Police Dog Service team and officers conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
Investigators reviewed security video from the property to determine what the man was doing on the rural property. The footage revealed a criminal offence had occurred within an enclosed animal pen on the property.
Van Meenen released surveillance images of the suspect on social media in hopes of identifying him.
It worked.
“A social media post related to this incident has received significant public attention and has resulted in a large volume of information being provided to police,” said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer. “Investigators actively reviewed this information, and a suspect has been identified. The investigation remains ongoing.”
Police, who thank the public for their assistance, confirm an arrest was made in connection with the incident.
Van Meenen was told the arrest took place in Golden on Monday, Jan. 26.
But she is concerned that he has since been released and no charges have been laid yet.
“It’s extremely disheartening. I’m trying to remain hopeful that they will still charge him in the near future.”
Knowing that there’s cameras at the facility, she doesn’t think the man will return.
But she is also keeping her livestock guardian dog outside as the disturbing incident has left her in fear.
“I think I will always be concerned for my horses now.”
