Red hot Ridge Meadows Flames extend win streak to five games

The Ridge Meadows Flames are back on a roll, as they ran their winning streak to five games with wins over the Burnaby Steelers (6-2) and Coastal Tsunami (4-2).

The Gibsons squad was at Cam Neely Arena in Maple Ridge on Friday night, Jan. 16, and the Flames jumped on them for three goals early in the second period, then hung on to win.

Assistant captain Samuel Allen was the game’s first star, as he put up three assists, while the goals were scored by Jonah Power Smith, Max Wingrove, Matthew Biros and Cohen Muc. Goaltender Matt Candusso got the win, with 26 saves on 28 shots.

On Saturday, the Flames again had balanced offence and good goaltending, as Nicholas Muc had 32 saves on 34 shots to earn the win.

Joshua Bettesworth was the first star with two goals, Biros second star with three apples, and Power Smith third star with a goal and a helper.

Captain Zack Lagrange, who hadn’t seen action since Jan. 2, was back in the lineup with a pair of assists.

It was big night for the Steelers, who hosted Saturday night junior hockey at iconic Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster. It’s the first time in more than 20 years junior hockey has been played in the historic barn, and former NHL player Kyle Turris was inducted into the Steelers Wall of Honour that night.

The Flames head coach Brent Hughes, who also had a playing career in the NHL, is a former New Westminster Bruin.

His team will be challenged to extend their winning streak, as a tough matchup against the league’s top team looms.

The Flames will be in Richmond to face the Sockeyes on Thursday night. They have 35 wins and just five losses this year, while the Flames have gone 25-12.

Then on Friday Ridge host the Chilliwack Jets at Cam Neely Arena. The Jets have beaten the Flames in three of four games this season, but the Flames embarrassed them 7-1 in their last outing on Jan. 11. Game time is 7 p.m.
