Police host event for crime prevention volunteers

The Ridge Meadows RCMP is hosting an information session for crime prevention volunteers on Jan. 22.

The session will be held at the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment from 5-6 p.m., for those who would like to make a difference in their community by acting as an extra set of eyes and ears for police.

Attendees will meet crime prevention staff, speak with police officers, and learn about the application process and volunteer opportunities.

“Our crime prevention volunteers are a vital part of how we work with the community to enhance public safety,” said Superintendent Adam Gander, Officer in Charge of Ridge Meadows RCMP. “They provide real-time information to our officers and staff that help guide our operations and strengthen our overall crime prevention efforts.”

These volunteers support a wide range of community safety initiatives. Duties may include recording vehicle speeds and incidents of distracted driving, patrolling neighbourhood hot spots by bike and reporting suspicious activity, running licence plates for possible stolen vehicles, supporting community events, hosting information booths, and even donning the popular Safety Bear mascot costume.

“It’s fun, it’s unique, and it’s not something that everyone gets to do,” said Celina Dominelli, crime prevention unit supervisor. “Whether you’re interested in policing as a career or want to be a champion for public safety, there’s truly something for everyone. We have a great mix of people with different backgrounds and experiences. We’d love to see new faces join our team.”
