Population growth slowing down in Central Okanagan: Statistics Canada

The Central Okanagan saw its lowest population growth this decade in 2025.

According to the latest population numbers from Statistics Canada, as of July 1, 2025, the greater Kelowna population — which includes West Kelowna, Peachland, and Lake Country — rose by 1.2 per cent to 254,605 people in 2025 compared to 251,648 in 2024.

The growth of just under 3,000 people is the lowest the region has seen in the 2020s as nearly 8,000 new people arrived in 2022, just over 6,100 in 2023, and 5,600 in 2024.

The latest numbers show that only 646 people moved to Kelowna from other provinces while 1,108 new residents are accounted for via international migration. That number is also significantly down from previous years.

With the increase of 1.2 per cent, Kelowna is no longer classified as one of Canada’s fastest growing cities like previous years.

Out of all of Canada’s metropolitan areas, only Toronto and Kamloops saw a decrease in population. In total, Kamloops’ decrease was 259 people, 0.2 per cent.

Edmonton’s population grew the most in Canada in 2025, raising by three per cent, followed by Calgary and Moncton at 2.9 per cent. Montreal and Vancouver experienced a very slight growth at 0.5 and 0.2 per cent respectively.

Statistics Canada released the newest numbers on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
