Canucks dumped 4-1 by Blue Jackets as losing skid reaches 9 games

The skid continues for the Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks dropped their ninth straight game, falling 4-1 to the host Columbus Blue Jackets in NHL action Thursday at Nationwide Arena.

Charlie Coyle, Kirill Marchenko, Zach Werenski and Kent Johnson scored for the Blue Jackets (21-19-7). Elvis Merzlikins earned the win in goal, stopping 30 shots.

Brock Boeser scored the lone goal for Vancouver (16-25-5), his first marker since Nov. 28. Kevin Lankinen took the loss in net, making 32 saves.

Coyle got the only goal in the first 20 minutes, scoring his 10th of the year on a power play at 17:25. Coyle beat Lankinen with a nifty backhand in close. The Blue Jackets held a 15-11 shots on goal advantage after one period.

In the second, Marchenko made it 2-0 at 5:49, firing a low glove-side shot past Lankinen for his 17th of the season. Werenski then counted his 18th of the year at 10:14, snapping home a power-play goal from the right circle.

Boeser broke his lengthy 22-game drought at 14:09, also on the power play, taking a nice cross-ice feed from forward Elias Pettersson and beating Merzlikins from the left circle. Boeser now has 10 goals on the year.

Johnson wrapped up the scoring midway through the third, converting a Boone Jenner feed on a 2-on-1 for his fifth goal of the season.

The Canucks return home Saturday to host the Edmonton Oilers (7 p.m.) at Rogers Arena.
