City starting work on Volker Park improvements this month

Maple Ridge City Hall is publicizing updated plans for new park improvements coming this summer.

The city shared the results of a second phase of community engagement for the Volker Park Improvements Project, and said in a press release feedback shows strong support for new amenities in the final park design. Construction is scheduled to begin this month, with the park ready for Summer.

There will be a number of new features at the park located at 21131 123 Ave., beside Laity View Elementary School, based on community feedback.

There was high approval of the new playground design, which includes a zipline, with requests for additional play features for children aged 2–5, and more swing options.

The public also supports a new spray park, seating and picnic areas, benches, and seat walls near play areas and along pathways.

The city plans a 20-stall parking lot with accessible spaces, a washroom building, and paved pathways.

Protecting existing trees was a priority for respondents, and the city says all existing trees will be retained, and additional trees will be planted as part of the project.

Participants also shared concerns, including more traffic, road safety, limited parking, and a change from what the city calls the “passive character” of the park. The potential for loitering, vandalism, and other unwanted activities were also mentioned.

Several design and operational measures are planned to address safety and neighbourhood concerns. The park will remain fenced along 123 Avenue, with a new baffle gate near the spray park entrance to slow pedestrian movement while leaving the park. The city has also completed crosswalk enhancements and school zone warning signage on 123 Avenue near Volker Park and Laity View Elementary School.

The washroom building will be secured with an automatic door locking system, and the new parking lot will include a gate. Park visits by maintenance staff will be increased with the new spray park and washroom.

Pedestrian access to the park will remain available during construction.
