Nylander counts 3 points as Toronto Maple Leafs drub Canucks 5-0

William Nylander had a goal and two assists, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Saturday at the Scotiabank Centre.

Matias Maccelli, Max Domi, John Tavares and Nicholas Robertson also scored for the Leafs (22-15-7), with Joseph Woll making 29 saves for the shutout and the goaltending win. It was Woll’s second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

Thatcher Demko gave up three goals on six shots in the first period for Vancouver (16-23-5), before being pulled in favour of Kevin Lankinen, who stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced.

Despite outshooting the Leafs 15-6 in the first period, the Canucks found themselves down 3-0 after 20 minutes.

Maccelli opened the scoring at 8:03 on the power play, tapping home a nice net-front feed from Nylander for his seventh goal of the year.

Domi upped the lead to 2-0 at 16:31 after a Canucks turnover in the neutral zone. Domi moved down the left wing and fired a short-side shot that eluded Demko.

With just 20 seconds left in the period, Nylander boosted Toronto’s lead to 3-0, taking a cross-ice feed from Steven Lorentz, cutting across the net, outwaiting Demko and backhanding home his 15th of the season.

Kevin Lankinen replaced Demko in goal for the Canucks to start the second period.

Tavares made it 4-0 for Toronto at 13:07 of the middle frame, after yet another turnover by the Canucks. He took a feed from Nylander, moved in alone on Lankinen and fired home a shot high to the glove side. Tavares has 16 goals on the season.

With six minutes left in the period, Domi landed several strong lefts to decision Vancouver’s Marcus Pettersson in a spirited scrap.

Shots on goal after 40 minutes favoured Vancouver, 23-18.

The Leafs rounded out the scoring in a listless third period when Robertson pounced on a loose puck in the slot and scored a power-play goal with 14 seconds left.

The Canucks visit the Montreal Canadiens on Monday (4:30 p.m.) as they continue their six-game road swing.
