LETTER: Street trees are a waste of tax dollars

Dear Editor,

Who’s the genius at city hall that decided he would pee away taxpayers money to purchase 10,000 trees to be planted on boulevards across the city?

If city hall can afford to spend money like this, then they can also afford to introduce garbage pickup for our residents “without tax increases” – as they have repeatedly stated they would have to do if they granted us the privilege of having residential curbside garbage pickup.

This a blatant misuse of taxpayers money, while it may serve to beautify the city boulevards, it does little to actually serve the residents of Maple Ridge, which incidentally is councils job.

We are the only municipality in the entire Lower Mainland without garbage pickup.

This discrepancy of public service has gone on long enough, and my feeling is that if city hall can afford these trees, and in the past, several other useless purchases – , then we , the people of Maple Ridge are paying too much for property taxes, and an adjustment in the mill rate is needed to reflect more fiscal responsibility.

Let’s get real!

John Turner, Maple Ridge
