Maple Ridge Pathfinder cafe asking for financial help to stay open

A non-profit cafe that supports community youth programs is in need of help themselves.

Bean Around Books & Tea is a non-profit bookstore and cafe that provides youth facing barriers to employment with the unique opportunity and support to gain employable skills and experience that enhance their resumes and further their careers.

It is owned and operated by Pathfinder Youth Centre Society.

But, manager Darcy Daniels, says the cafe needs some financial help to stay afloat and he has created a GoFundMe to keep the doors open.

“We are seeking investments from the community in order to keep our business, safe space, and humble abode operational with some room to maneuver while we transition into a new era,” said Daniels in the online fundraiser for the cafe.

He said that despite cutting expenses, and tightening their operations, they still find themselves in need of help.

And, he noted, Bean Around Books is not just a cafe, they help youth aged 16 to 30 who are looking for their first work experience, or those looking to rebuild a routine, gain skills in cash handling, customer service, barista training, and more.

He added, for a long time, the cafe has been a “home away from home” for many people from all corners of the community.

In addition to patrons who enjoy hanging out at the cafe, local authors also hold their book promotions and publishing events at the cafe. Poetry slams are also held at the cafe.

“We know times are tough for many, and asking for help is not easy. Every contribution, big or small, will go directly to keeping the café open, supporting staff, and stabilizing operations while we build a sustainable long-term recovery plan,” appealed Daniels, who is trying to raise $10,000.

As of Monday, Dec. 29, 26 donors have raised $2,022 of the goal.

“If this café has ever touched your life… If you’ve ever found comfort inside its walls… If you’ve ever shared a warm drink, a story, a laugh, or even a moment of peace here- we’re asking from the bottom of our hearts: Please help us keep Bean Around Books alive,” said Daniels.
