The Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt has been closed for around 10 hours and will remain shut down for a while longer.
Multiple vehicle crashes in various locations caused the highway to close in both directions on Monday, Dec. 22 around 9:30 p.m.
As of 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, the highway remains closed. According to DriveBC, an assessment is still in progress, with the next update coming around 8:15 a.m.
On Monday night just before 6:30 p.m., DriveBC issued a travel advisory for the stretch of highway saying there were forecasted intense snowfalls expected throughout the night and into the morning.
“Travelers to expect intense bursts and extremely limited visibility,” said DriveBC. “Expect delays and slow moving plows and equipment working.”
The travel advisory has been re-issued on Tuesday morning. However, for the first time in over a week, Environment Canada has not issued a snowfall warning for the highway.
