Abbotsford baseball team launches fundraiser to rebuild after flood

For the second time in four years, the Abbotsford Cardinals are having to rebuild after a devastating flood.

The British Columbia Premier Baseball League team calls east Abbotsford’s DeLair Park its home and that park, along with surrounding areas, suffered significant flooding during the recent atmospheric river that hit Abbotsford.

It’s believed that the damage suffered this year is similar to what occurred in the 2021 flood.

The team has launched a fundraiser to help rebuild and are seeking $100,000 to ease the sting of these losses.

“With the recent floods in the Lower mainland, the Abbotsford Cardinals have once again lost their facility, including turf, cages and equipment,” the GoFundMe states. “This local training facility is also home to the Yale Baseball Academy and local instructors who offer private training sessions for the up and coming youth in our community.”

The fundraiser also hints that the Cardinals may choose to leave DeLair Park, as having this type of disaster occur twice in four years is not sustainable for a youth sports group.

“We are looking for donations to not only replace turf and equipment, but also help off-set incurring rental space costs over the coming months to ensure that our players can still train and be ready for the 2026 season,” the fundraiser states. “Furthermore, our organization will now be seeking an alternative, permanent space to call home to ensure that we don’t find ourselves in the same predicament over the coming years.”

The fundraiser has collected $5,500 as of Wednesday (Dec. 17) afternoon.

The 2021 fundraiser saw the team collect $56,780 from 228 donations. The team also received a donation of old turf from PavCo, who had recently installed new turf at BC Place around the same time as the flood. FieldTurf, Beyond The Turf, and Binnie removed and then helped with the installation at the Cardinals facility in early-2022.

Cardinals officials added that coming back stronger from yet another flood is a goal for the club.

“Despite this unfortunate circumstance, our mandate will continue to develop upstanding and high character baseball players and people through commitment to development, competition, sacrifice, and culture,” the fundraiser stated. “Our coaches will continue to create an environment where athletes are challenged to reach their full potential both on and off the field, and our culture will continue to be driven by great people. True growth comes from sacrifice, trust, adversity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence and this flood will be just one minor bump along the road.”

The BCPBL schedule typically begins in late-March or early-April and runs until July.
