63-year-old woman dies after being struck by pickup truck in Chilliwack

A 63-year-old Chilliwack woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Vedder Road on Tuesday (Nov. 25).

In an update on Wednesday (Nov. 26), Chilliwack RCMP said a 63-year-old man driving a 2007 GMC Sierra struck the woman in the Vedder Road and Luckakuck Road intersection at approximately 4:22 p.m.

“The pedestrian had crossed the roadway halfway and was on the centre median before stepping back into the southbound lanes,” RCMP said.

Police said the driver and witnesses stopped immediately. Per the release, investigators say there is no indication that speed, alcohol, or driver inattention contributed to the collision.

First responders included RCMP, fire crews and paramedics. The person suffered serious injuries and despite all efforts, died on scene.

A coroner attended the scene, as did the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

“It was initially reported that the collision involved a semi-truck. This was determined not to be the case; the only vehicle involved was the GMC Sierra pickup truck,” RCMP said.

The crash closed a portion of the Vedder Road interchange at Highway 1 in Chilliwack.

The eastbound exit off Vedder Road was closed due to emergency vehicles and an investigation of the incident.The road was re-opened at about 8:15 p.m.
